Inspect our telemetry figures and you could be forgiven for thinking the top-ranking X7 was an all-out M product rather than one that’s merely laced with M-car cues. It’s worth noting, too, that the optional Travel and Comfort System furnishes the second and third rows of seats with a generous number of USB-C ports, and tablets can be fitted to the backs of the front-seat headrests. ![]() The 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround audio system fitted as standard to the M60i also stands out for its clarity and depth. The broad, curved display is, however, superbly sharp and versatile, accommodating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as though the software was native. ![]() ![]() Some of the climate controls have also migrated onto the touchscreen, meaning adjustment now requires you to take your eyes off the road for longer. There are simply too many icons on the screen for you to either scroll past using the rotary control or press with your finger (which necessitates leaning forward a bit awkwardly). Multimedia systemīMW’s iDrive 8 offers plenty of functionality and ‘wow’ factor but perhaps not quite the same level of intuitiveness as the generation it replaces. Note also that the tailgate has a split-folding design, with both sections electronically controlled. It will seat seven in comfort, though there’s an optional six-seat layout, and every berth is electrically adjustable and heated. In terms of capacity, the X7 remains vast. Not even the M60i’s subtle but effective interior lighting can remedy this. Its absence diminishes the feeling that you’re in the secure, cosseting cockpit of something fast and serious. Yet even in something the X7’s size it’s a bit of an odd presence, and we miss the leather-clad cowling the driver would traditionally gaze over. In fairness, this scale of the display looks quite at home in the X7, while in smaller cars such as the facelifted BMW 3 Series it simply dominates the cabin, feeling inescapable. Less immediately lovable is iDrive 8, which integrates the central infotainment and instrument readouts into one vast, curved display. For an everyday kind of car, the X7 exists in a neat sweet spot of functional luxury, though we would understand if some M60i owners would prefer a bit more individuality for £109,000. Soft leather and some interesting fascias play off against familiar physical controls honed to perfection by the simple fact they’ve been deployed by BMW hundreds of thousands of times. The current 5 Series has always struck an excellent balance of ergonomic thoughtfulness and material richness, and the X7 replicates the former and subtly heightens the latter, all to desirable effect. This comes with the territory because, unlike any Range Rover or Bentley Bentayga, the X7 derives from an established family of executive cars, so an element of homogeneity should be expected.īut actually, rather than this being disadvantageous, the link to BMW’s mid-ranking saloon is not a bad thing. Slide aboard an X7 and you will find it feels much more the super-sized, lifted-up BMW 5 Series than an out-and-out, stand-alone luxury SUV. It is likely to resurface in the next M5. Note also that the X7 M60i marks a relatively low-key debut for M’s new S68 engine, with its cross-bank exhaust manifold. On the six-cylinder petrol, the system can even provide all-electric driving at very low speeds, though in all cases it contributes to overall torque output. One of them is the adoption of 48V mild-hybrid technology, which is found on both the 375bhp X7 xDrive40i 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and its 335bhp diesel counterpart, as well as the 523bhp 4.4-litre V8 tested here. However, look beyond the headlights, the redesigned kidney grille and, if specified, the new 23in alloy wheels that are the biggest ever fitted to any BMW, and there are some meaningful changes. A full-size SUV with the option of seven seats, the X7 is the largest car BMW makes and comes with a choice of six- or eight-cylinder engines, all paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and variable four-wheel drive. BMW’s move to a split-headlight design for the X7 marks out the facelifted model, though fundamentally the car remains unchanged.

For nearly 24 months in a row, Solar Cycle 25 has exceeded expectations, with sunspot counts getting close to those recorded at the previous cycle’s peak. However, it seems that the current solar cycle has fared higher than expected. According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, the next solar maximum is not expected until 2025, while the previous solar low was in 2019. Since its discovery in 1755, 25 of these activity cycles have been documented. The sun has much more sunspots and higher solar activity at the solar maximum compared to the solar minimum some six to eight years later. The number of sunspots changes during the course of the sun’s 11-year solar cycle. Auroras may be seen in the middle latitudes and radio communications can be disrupted if any of these solar ejections makes contact with Earth and sets off a geomagnetic storm. When the sun erupts, X-rays are emitted in the form of solar flares, which are like the muzzle flash.ĬMEs are the magic wand they are very fast-moving plasma and magnetic field plumes from the sun. In most cases, solar flares and coronal mass ejections originate from sunspots due to the magnetic activity they generate. Sunspot AR3310 is around four times the size of Earth, according to Bum-Suk. Only around one hundred sixty nine millionths of the solar disk is covered by Earth’s surface area. This sunspot has grown to such a magnitude that it can now be seen from Earth even without the use of a telescope. On Tuesday, observers saw sunspot AR3310 located in the bottom center of the solar disk. “The minimal visibility threshold is estimated as 425 millionths of the visible solar disk-0.04 percent of the solar disk-whereas larger sunspot area and favorable meteorological conditions improve their visibility,” Hisashi Hayakawa, a solar physicist at Japan’s Nagoya University told Newsweek. Sometimes sunspots are big enough that they may be seen with the naked eye, however you should still use eye protection since the sun’s glare can be rather intense. If these fields are strong enough, they prevent part of the heat from the sun’s core from reaching its atmosphere, which results in the surface of the sun being colder and seeming darker than normal. Sunspots are patches of darkness that appear on the surface of the sun and are created by concentrations of magnetic fields that are exceptionally strong and twisted. A can be seen to the left of the center of the solar disk.” “A giant sunspot, visible to the naked eye, is crossing the sun’s disk. “Naked-Eye Sunspot using Solar Glasses (or Solar Filter),” Yeom said in an Instagram post sharing the image. An image of the sunspot, with a little Earth superimposed on it, was released on the internet by a South Korean astronomer by the name of Bum-Suk Yeom. It is no longer necessary to use a telescope in order to see sunspot AR3310 from Earth since its size has increased to the point where it is now visible with the naked eye. The size of one of the sun’s sunspots has increased to the point that it can be seen from Earth without the need of magnification nevertheless, eye protection is still clearly recommended while viewing it. ![]() To break up the action a little, occasionally you'll hop aboard a giant Walker mech and stomp around for a bit causing maximum destruction (but never actually die because you've got a rechargeable shied), or glide around in a SMC Hovertank shooting equally gigantic (and admittedly spectacular) targets (and rarely die for the same reasons), or engage in some on-rails shooting against a band of relentless pursuers (and never die, because, well, it's a piece of piss). Of course, along the way you're expected to duke it out with thousands of lurking Strogg, but that's all in the line of duty. ![]() ![]() No-one really expects this freshman to see out the day, but how can the Strogg menace stand in the way of one man and his trusty quick-save key?įrom the very beginning, right to the end of the game, Raven is more than happy to design a pretty, linear and by-the-numbers shooter that has you plodding hither and thither down dark and eery metallic (brown) corridors, replete with flashing consoles on a series of 'flick this switch' quests for the next ten or so hours. With the game kicking-off on Kane's first day of frontline duty, you're forever being told what to do, where to go, and to be quick about it. One thing is clear: brown is back, and it's browner than ever, and as we quickly descend through the linear path of rubble into the linear bowels of the linear Strogg base, Quake 4 starts as it means to go on: by ordering you around like the underling you are, in formulaic, linear fashion. ![]() Am I alive? Where am I? "Get over here marine!" Lazy line painter Jane Strange things, these Strogg. With typically spectacular Doom III-powered aplomb, the scene's set. But things don't get off to the best of starts when Rhino squad are shot out of the sky and most of the team perish in the ensuing crash. You're thrown into the fray as Rhino squad's new recruit Matthew Kane, and the game kicks off in typically macho big-space-marines-with-even-bigger-guns-and-we're gonna-kick-ass sci-fi style with your ship heading for a final assault on the pesky Strogg. But enough of that for the moment let's start at the beginning. It needs its own stamp, its own personality, and that's most crucially where Quake 4 lacks. This is the crucial point, because in a genre as saturated as the FPS there needs to be some element of surprise, some sense of the unknown to drag you through, or else you end up feeling like you could be playing any number of other shooters. Well, it doesn't exactly fail at anything it does, except perhaps do the things that you'd expect a next generation shooter to do, to do something, anything, that a bunch of other games haven't done to death already. It ticks all the right boxes: decent, chatty buddy AI, a semblance of a storyline, 'thrilling' on-rails sections, a fine selection of (upgradeable) weapons, an interesting plot twist, some 'intense action', mech combat, tank combat and all wrapped up in the most powerful graphics engine the world has ever seen. In summary, Quake 4 is a textbook example of 'how to make a highly competent first-person shooter using someone else's new engine'. But so much so that most of the veteran shooters among us will be rueing Raven's overly formulaic approach to something that we were all hoping would amaze us. Because everything about Quake 4 is in its right place. Whichever opening salvo you prefer, the general message appears to be one of 'don't be surprised'. Best dust off the Alienware mouse and stick it to The Strogg one more time, eh? Far from being thrown into disarray, the Carmack, Willits and co regroup and build the new, more powerful Doom III game engine and commission long-term cohorts Raven to churn out a game that picks up where Quake II left off. That's definitely the case with Quake 4, with Valve's great foe, id, undeterred by being too busy working on other stuff to get around to making another game in the Quake series. Old franchises never die, they just return in time to show off new gaming technology. Best take that one out as well then, eh?Īlternatively, the opening paragraph could have just as easily have gone like this: Far from being thrown into disarray, the cybernetic warriors regroup and rebuild a new, more powerful Makron. That's definitely the case with Quake 4, with Earth's great foe, The Strogg, undeterred by the loss of their leader, the Makron. Alien menaces never die, they just return in time to show off new gaming technology. ![]() When a player is able to catch two types of fish with a harpoon (for example able to catch both tuna and swordfish), players will typically catch more of the fish which requires a lower fishing level (in this case tuna) than the fish that requires a higher fishing level to catch (the swordfish). Before the introduction of the tool belt, many people preferred to use the barb-tail harpoon over the regular harpoon because it can be wielded, allowing for one more inventory space and therefore slightly more efficient fishing. The harpoon is not a one time use object, therefore players can use a harpoon to catch as many fish as they like. Players cannot wield a harpoon, and therefore it takes up one inventory slot unless it is on the tool belt.
